Pool safety is so important that states and local municipalities have instituted local codes to bolster it. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, has launched a “Pool Safely” campaign aimed at preventing and reducing childhood accidental deaths involving swimming pools. Pool safety is an issue that homeowners grapple with year-round. How do I reduce risk and keep my family — and anyone else — safe in and around our residential swimming pool?

According to the CPSC, “nearly 300 children younger than five drown in swimming pools and spas and more than 3,200 children that age go to hospital emergency rooms due to submersion injuries in pools and spas.”

To begin with, awareness and education are key factors.

Knowing and understanding the potential pool safety risks is a good first step.

Northeastern Fences understands the enclosure aspect of the pool safety equation. We are conversant with pool codes and know how to give you a code-compliant pool enclosure. The CPSC recommends various specifications for pool barriers, which essentially are physical devices to limit access to a pool. The Pool Safely initiative suggests that fences be 4 feet high or taller without footholds or handholds. They also suggest that vertical fence slats be less than 4 inches apart. And chain link fences should have no part of the diamond-shaped opening larger than 1-3/4 inches. The fence or wall bottom should not be more than 4 inches above grade.

Again, we not only understand pool safety guidelines and recommendations, we also understand local codes and regulations.

Moreover, we add what we have learned from decades of experience.

Pool Safely also recommends these safety measures:

  • Never leave a child unattended in a pool; watch your child when he or she is in or near water
  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings
  • Have a telephone close by when you or your family is using a pool or spa
  • Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency
  • If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door alarms
  • Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water

A safe enclosure for your pool does not have to detract from the attractiveness of your home; in fact, it can add to your property’s beauty.
