The security and well being of your livestock is very important, which is why installing livestock gates to keep them safe is essential. Livestock naturally love to roam, thus livestock gates are the perfect solution for those who want to contain them within a specified boundary while still giving them the freedom to roam around. Livestock gates will help keep your animals inside, preventing them from escaping and/or invading your neighbors’ farm or property.
PLAN AHEAD, PLAN WISELY
Be smart when purchasing gates and corrals for your livestock and invest wisely. Spending a little extra time planning on the front end will save you a tremendous amount of time and money on the back end. At the same time, understanding which areas of your property may require more of a heavy-duty gate and which areas will be okay with a more moderate configuration. For example, most likely the back of the hay field won’t require the heaviest duty gate. Instead, you can opt to go with a lighter duty gate there and reserve the installation of the heavier duty gates for your higher traffic and containment areas.
HERD MENTALITY CAN BE DANGEROUS
Only one cow needs to decide to jump a corral before the herd mentality decides to kick in and encourages the other cattle to follow suit. If you’re using a lighter weight gate or corral when this happens, it’ll more than likely easily be crushed and will allow all of the cows to run out. This will create absolute chaos! If the herd gets out, it’ll cost you time and money, as you’ll need to work overtime just to get the cattle back in. On the other hand, these lighter weight gates are practical and work great for the majority of your farm’s perimeter.
HEAVIER GATES KEEP LIVESTOCK SAFE AND PROTECT ONLOOKERS
Installing heavier gates and corrals in high traffic and containment areas will help prevent injury to the livestock and the people working them. Using a lighter weight gate in one of these high traffic and/or containment areas can result in someone who is standing on the outside of the gate getting crushed if the animal decides to make a break for it and attempts to jump over the gate. Because of this very reason, it is recommended that farmers create strong containment areas to provide for the safety of their livestock and everyone who may need access to them (including veterinarians).
