If you live in New York State and raise livestock, chances are you’ll need a livestock gate, as good fences and gates are critical to success. There are three features that should be at or near the top of your list of considerations when deciding on a livestock gate. You’ll want:
- A gate that will keep your valuable assets safely enclosed (keep your animals in and predators out);
- A gate that is livestock-proof but not human-proof (it’s easy for you to open but not for your cows to slip through);
- A gate that is as attractive as it is useful, one that adds polish to your farm or ranch.
At Northeastern Fences, we can cover all of those bases for you. We understand how important it is to have a well-made, reliable and easy-to-use livestock gate to ensure that your animals are secured in their pens and/or pastures. Before you begin the process of selecting the right gate for you and your property, there are a few more things you should know:
Why should I buy a livestock gate?
Your asset is worth protecting. According to the New York Farm Bureau, our state’s livestock is our most valuable farm product. In 2008, our livestock was valued at $2.4 billion (this includes dairy, cattle, hogs, poultry, etc.), far more than our field crops, fruit and vegetable crops, or other crops like floriculture, Christmas trees, or maples. Because of its inherent value, you cannot be too careful when it comes to protecting it!
Can I afford to buy a livestock gate?
Livestock gates are very affordable. Depending on the gate you choose, your price will obviously vary. Nevertheless, any amount is, no doubt, a small price to pay to securely rein in one of your most precious commodities. When you think about it, you really need to ask yourself, “Can I afford not to buy a livestock gate?”
What if I need a custom gate?
Livestock gates come in a variety of sizes and colors or can be custom-made for your particular application. Some gates are specially made for enclosing particular animals, whereas other gates are for more of a universal application. When you work with us, you never have to worry. A Northeastern Fences expert can and will help you select the gate that will best meet your needs.
What are some of the available security features/options?
Agricultural gates can be opened with a push button gate control, key chain transmitter, a gate-opening sensor, or they can be simply padlocked. If you want the ease of being able to open your gate from inside your property, you may want to ask about a push button control, which is a hard-wired device that looks a lot like a doorbell and that you can mount anywhere you’d like, inside or out. Another option is a gate-opening sensor, which will detect the presence of mass metal in motion and be able to automatically open to allow automobiles through.
