Niskayuna Brings Down The Barriers With Niska-Day
Niska-Day was established in 1980 as a way for residents to celebrate and display their community spirit and foster a sense of well being for children in the area. This fun filled day is held each year on the second Saturday of May. The entertainers, participating businesses, volunteers and attendees come together through parades, a run, tents filled with arts and crafts, and at the popular food court. The evening brings a huge fireworks display.
The fun of Niska-Day is not to be overshadowed by the purpose of the event, which is to raise funds to assist the Niskayuna School District in providing a platform of sound mental health for its 4000+ students. In addition, when assistance is needed, the Niskayuna School District has the resources to be proactive in identifying and providing intervention as needed.
GE’s Global Research Center
Since the late 1800s, General Electric (GE) has continued to grow and evolve using the inventions and ideas of Thomas Edison as its original inspiration. Today, the largest of seven state-of-the-art research and development facilities is located in Niskayuna. While GE is most recognizable for its light bulbs and electric products, the company’s history of inventiveness and diversity continues today. GE was instrumental in producing the first x-ray machine in 1896, first radio broadcast in 1906 and the first TV show was broadcast in 1927. The first “invisible” glass (which was a precursor to the materials used in today’s camera lenses and prescription eyeglasses) was created by a GE Scientist in 1939. Our modern health care and diagnostic abilities have advanced thanks to GE and their development of the first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in 1983 and VSCanTM portable ultra-sound device in 2009. GE developed the Multi OmyxTM device to help identify cancer markers in 2013.
Every year GE hosts a Science Day for fourth grade students in Niskayuna to come to their facility and explore science through hands-on events. The Niskayuna Center also offers undergraduate and graduate internships. GE instituted a new program to advance its Industrial Software division and provides education for software engineers based on the company’s technical initiatives.
When not working or attending school, residents of Niskayuna enjoy the summertime evening concerts held each week at the Town Hall Gazebo. Jazz, blues, rock and bluegrass are just a few of the musical genres featured during June and July.
The Niskayuna town pool has adult, children and family swim times and offers lessons as well. The fields at River Road and Blatnick Park are the venue of many popular sports leagues. The city of Niskayuna offers a variety of camps and classes ranging from golf, to dancing to mountain biking. The driving range and dog park are also popular places to relax.
Whether you’ve always dreamed of the home with the white picket fence, or your purpose in adding a fence to your property is for function and security, you will never be “on the fence” about who to trust with your fence project when you call the fencing experts at Northeastern Fences.
